Sandy: East Coast braces for epic hurricane, ?life-threatening? storm surge

[UPDATED: 3:00 p.m. ET]

"Superstorm." "The Perfect Storm." "Frankenstorm."

Whatever you want to call it, the East Coast is bracing for Hurricane Sandy, a "rare hybrid storm" that is expected to bring a life-threatening storm surge to the mid-Atlantic coast, Long Island Sound and New York harbor, forecasters say, with winds expected to be at or near hurricane force when it makes landfall sometime on Monday.

According to the National Hurricane Center, the Category 1 hurricane was centered about 270 miles southeast of Cape Hatteras, N.C., and 575 miles south of New York City early Sunday, carrying maximum sustained winds of 75 mph and moving northeast at 14 mph.

[Slideshow: Latest photos from Hurricane Sandy]

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg ordered the immediate, mandatory evacuation for low-lying coastal areas, including Coney Island, the Rockaways, Brighton Beach, Red Hook and some parts of lower Manhattan.

"If you don't evacuate, you're not just putting your own life at risk," Mayor Bloomberg said at a news conference Sunday. "You're endangering first responders who may have to rescue you."

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie's message for residents was a bit more blunt. "Don't be stupid," Christie said Sunday afternoon, announcing the suspension of the state's transit system beginning at 12:01 a.m. Monday.

Earlier, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced the suspension of all MTA service--including subways, buses, Long Island Railroad and Metro North--beginning at 7 p.m. Sunday. New York City Public Schools will be closed on Monday, the mayor said. City offices and the New York Stock Exchange, however, will be open for business.

[Related: Superstorm could impact 60 million]

Sandy is expected to continue on a parallel path along the mid-Atlantic coast later Sunday before making a sharp turn toward the northwest and southern New Jersey coastline on Monday--with the Jersey Shore and New York City in its projected path.

But the path is not necessarily the problem.

"Don't get fixated on a particular track," the Associated Press said. "Wherever it hits, the rare behemoth storm inexorably gathering in the eastern U.S. will afflict a third of the country with sheets of rain, high winds and heavy snow."

(Weather.com)

A tropical storm warning has been issued between Cape Fear to Duck, N.C., while hurricane watches and high-wind warnings are in effect from the Carolinas to New England. The hurricane-force winds extend 175 miles from the epicenter of the storm, while tropical storm-force winds extend 520 miles--making Sandy one of the biggest storms to ever hit the East Coast.

"We're looking at impact of greater than 50 to 60 million people," Louis Uccellini, head of environmental prediction for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, told the Associated Press.

"The size of this alone, affecting a heavily populated area, is going to be history making," Jeff Masters wrote on the Weather Underground blog.

[Also read: Big storm scrambles presidential race schedules]

"I can be as cynical as anyone," Christie said on Saturday, announcing a state of emergency. "But when the storm comes, if it's as bad as they're predicting, you're going to wish you weren't as cynical as you otherwise might have been."

Meanwhile, emergency evacuations were being mulled by state officials in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire and even Maine.

In Virginia, Governor Bob McDonnell said 20,000 homes there had already reported power outages.

"This is not a coastal threat alone," said Craig Fugate, director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, said during a media briefing early Sunday. "This is a very large area."

Forecasters also fear the combination of storm surge, high tide and heavy rain--between 3 and 12 inches in some areas--could be life-threatening for coastal residents.

According to the National Hurricane Center summary, coastal water levels could rise anywhere between 1 and 12 feet from North Carolina to Cape Cod, depending on the timing of the "peak surge." A surge of 6 to 11 feet is forecast for Long Island Sound and Raritan Bay, including New York Harbor.

The storm surge in New York Harbor during Hurricane Irene in September 2011, forecasters noted, was four feet.

Essential Home Maintenance For The Winter Months [Guest Post ...

When the cold weather starts to close in homeowners find themselves with some less than appealing DIY tasks on the to-do list. Many of the methods of winter-proofing your home are far from attractive activities, particularly when the weather outside is not so welcoming. To provide you with some motivation, taking the time to do them now will hopefully protect you against further hardship later.

Your first task on the maintenance to-do list is cleaning out your gutters. Flooding, freezing, cracking and collapsing are common occurrences for guttering during autumn and winter months. Make sure you give yours a good clearout before these problems surface and while you?re up there, have a good look for any loose roof tiles that could blow off in winter storms. It?s better to be safe than sorry!

Central heating and pipes should be next on your checklist. Boilers account for up to 60 per cent of domestic energy use, so ensuring yours is in good working order should save you money as well as prevent you from experiencing any unexpected internal cold spells. If you go away on holiday or to visit relatives and leave your home unattended, don?t forget to programme your central heating to come on for short spells or your pipes may freeze and burst. This is a problem experienced by thousands of people every winter, so don?t be caught out!

If you are going away for a prolonged period of time you should also inform your insurer. Many home insurance policies contain a clause that invalidates your policy should you leave the property empty for a sustained period of time, so if you are planning an extended winter ?break, let your policy provider know. View this as administrative maintenance for your home and if your policy will be affected consider solutions like having a family member housesit. Security awareness is also a maintenance issue in the winter months ? when burglars can target homes for seasonal pickings. Whether you are going away or not, investigate ways to make your home more secure by fitting double glazing or installing new technology such as a wireless alarm system.

Finally, remember your home boundaries extend beyond your front door and exterior walls and think about the impact of the seasons on your garden and driveway. Maintain fences and gates to ensure they will weather any coming storms and ready yourself with the tools needed to clear your driveway should snow or ice hit. In the past few years the UK has suffered slight salt shortages when the snow has landed, so it may be worthwhile holding your own private stash.

Interviews with Expats ? Nils-Henrik of Nettverk Stavanger ...

This article is one in a series of interviews with expats in Stavanger. Its purpose is to share with everyone what your fellow expats are doing and also to help advertise the businesses/services/events that these expats are involved in. If you would like to or know of a business/enterprise to be interviewed, feel free to contact us!

Interview with Nils-Henrik Stokke, co-founder of Nettverk Stavanger.

Please tell us a little about yourself.

I?m originally from Hof in Vestfold, but have lived in various places in Norway and now, over 7 years in Stavanger. I am 28 years old, engaged to be married and have a son who is almost two years old. We have two dogs and live in a pink brick house at Storhaug. I recently started as Country Manager at Fircroft, one of the world?s leading providers of technical recruitment services. Besides the job, I run among other things Nettverk Stavanger, Semaforum sales network, and I am a passionate home brewer.

What is Nettverk Stavanger and what does it do?

Nettverk Stavanger organizes events, meetings and activities that contribute to increased networking between young professionals in the Stavanger region. Everyone who contributes to the organization does this voluntarily. Nettverk Stavanger was founded in 2010 by myself and Jeffrey Bekkerin.

The largest event we have is called Mixer with hundreds of participants each time. Here we have short?talks?by inspiring and motivating people, good food and drinks, and of course a lot of networking among the participants!

We also have a leadership development programme called Mentor, which?starts twice a year with five new mentors, all top?management from the region with extensive experience in their fields. Members of Nettverk Stavanger can then apply for one of these as his or her personal mentor for one year. Along the way there are also seminars about leadership where both the mentors and the students meet.

Nettverk Stavanger has over 4100 members on LinkedIn, and has become a well-established project. In the future there are several new types of events planned, all with the same intention: to make Stavanger to a more attractive region to live and work in.

?

What made you set it up?

Before the establishment of Nettverk Stavanger there were?a number of small and complex networks, and no good meeting place that was free and open to everyone. Other?networks have either cost a lot of money, or have been limited to members only. The networks that existed were also often related to a particular industry or area.
Nettverk Stavanger is the arena for?young?professionals ? especially those who have moved to Stavanger. There were no events that had networking as the main focus, and that we wanted to change.

?

What do you hope to achieve from Nettverk Stavanger?

With?Network Stavanger I hope that we can make it more attractive to establish oneself here, both as an employee and as a business. With the Mixers I want people to be able to build networks in an easier way, which may lead to so many things. The Mentor programme allows future leaders in the region?to be?better prepared, have increased knowledge, a larger network, and that in the long term to maintain the competence of leadership in the region.

?

Tell us more about the upcoming mixer on the 2nd of November.

This Mixer has the CEO of Norsk Olje&Gass (former OLF) Gro Br?kken as the keynote speaker, and Jan Hauge, Technical Director at the Norwegian Opera & Ballet, will tell us about his experience as a Mentor the last year. Our new mentors will also be there and give a short presentation of themselves, but as always there will be less than an hour of talks and presentations, the rest of the evening is for networking, and here any language will do! We serve great food from Sabi Sushi (prepared at site!) and the bar is open all night.

It starts at 18:00, and finishes at 22:00. For those who want to, we have an after-party at Tango Cocktail Club. The CC is only 150,- and is paid when you sign up (includes a welcome drink and food), and to sign up you can go directly to deltager.no/mixer5 or see nettverkstavanger.no for more information (Norwegian mostly).

?

How has the feedback been from previous mixers?

We have gotten a lot of positive feedback from previous Mixers; people met open and network minded people, some got new jobs, signed new contracts, met companies that now work together on projects, and so on.

?

Any tips for successful networking, especially for foreigners new to the Norwegian culture?

I think foreigners are much more open to networking than Norwegians are, and the Mixer is actually not very ?Norwegian?.? So to be honest; I think local people could learn a lot from foreigners to be much more open-minded towards networking.

In general, here are some good tips on how to network on an event like Mixer:

o?? Don?t sell at networking meetings. Your goal is to meet people. You don?t have time to do a good sales presentation. Besides, there will be too many distractions.

o?? The best way to get something from networking is to give something. Don?t expect to get leads when you never give others leads. Networking is like marriage; you get out of it what you put into it.

o?? Remember me? When someone asks you what you do, say something memorable. This way it is easier for the other person to think of you when they meet someone who needs your product or service.

 • Not everyone is a prospect

o?? Qualify the people you meet into three categories; potential clients, source of referrals, interesting-but-nothing-more. Realize that not everyone will be a prospect. Networking is more than prospecting. It is also finding people who could lead you to potential new customers.

o?? Networking is more like farming than hunting. It takes time to cultivate and harvest. But once the harvest season starts, you will be well compensated.

Thank you Nils-Henrik for your time and good luck with the Mixer on the 2nd of November! To sign up for the Mixer, you can go directly to deltager.no/mixer5 or see nettverkstavanger.no.

81.5 MW Solar Power Plant for Japan by 2014

?
Japan is now building its?largest solar power plant to date in the Oita Prefecture. It will be finished in about 18 months. Approximately 350,000 solar panels will be used, covering a 105 hectare area. Marubeni Corp. is constructing the new facility and it will sell the power to Kyushu Electric Power Company. (Marubeni currently has about 5% renewables in its energy portfolio, but it intends to grow that number to 10% in the next several years.)

Oita_takasago.jpg

The 81.5 MW project will be built on the Oita coast due to the open space there. Oita is on Kyushu Island in southern Japan, an area with mountains and an active volcano. Agriculture is prominent.

Very aggressive feed-in tariffs are the incentive the Japanese government is using to try to make a dramatic shift away from nuclear power toward renewable energy. Another large solar project is under way at Kagoshima with a 70 MW potential. It is the largest solar project currently under construction in Japan.
?

?
The Fukushima disaster was a huge wake-up call about the dangers of aging and outdated nuclear power plant designs. Initially, it seemed the Japanese government was reluctant or very hesitant about acknowledging the severity of the damage.

However, by deciding to shutter nuclear power there and make the transition to other energy sources, it has chosen the most rational course. How it plays out remains to be seen. It will be very interesting to see if there is an increase in tourism in Oita due to the presence of a new solar plant and such a large one. Oita is already known for natural beauty and hiking.

Ally's Canadian auto finance unit sold to RBC for $4.1 billion

October 23, 2012 - 12:01 am ET
UPDATED: 10/23/12 2:25 pm ET

TORONTO (Reuters) -- Royal Bank of Canada has agreed to buy the Canadian auto finance and deposit arm of Ally Financial Inc. in a $4.1 billion deal to expand its vehicle-lending business at a time when loan growth overall is slowing in the country.

Canada's largest bank said on Tuesday the deal would give a big boost to its existing domestic consumer and commercial auto financing business, and position it as a leader in the segment.

Ally, majority-owned by the U.S. Treasury, outlined plans in May to sell its international operations, aiming to speed up repayment of government bailouts during the financial crisis.

The company is the former auto lending arm of General Motors. Last week it agreed to sell its Mexican insurance business to ACE Ltd for $865 million.

Ally expects to receive total proceeds of about $4.1 billion from the sale of its Canadian business. RBC said its cash outlay on the deal would be between $3.1 billion and $3.8 billion, as it is contingent on the size of the dividend that Ally intends to extract from its Canadian business before closing.

While Canadian banks still churn out steady profits, they have been struggling lately to spur growth in the face of slowing loan growth and narrow interest margins.

Given this backdrop, analysts said the deal may be good for RBC, noting that auto lending - at least on the personal side - is one of the areas that has continued to experience relatively strong growth.

"We view the transaction positively as it increases scale and builds out Royal's very profitable domestic franchise," Barclays analyst John Aiken said in a note to clients.

The deal, which requires regulatory approval, is expected to close in the first quarter of 2013. RBC competed with another Canadian bank, Toronto-Dominion Bank, in an auction for the assets, a source told Reuters on Monday.

The Canadian banking industry is dominated by six domestic banks, and the federal government discourages mergers among them, making growth opportunities hard to come by. Given this scenario, any assets that come up for grabs in Canada typically attract a flurry of interest.

"We believe this deal will deliver long-term strategic value and provide significant opportunities given the strength of the combined business and the attractive dynamics of the industry," RBC Chief Executive Gord Nixon said in a conference call.

"In summary, of all the deals we looked at in Canada, this was the one we really wanted," he said.

Ally deal

"This deal is consistent with our goal of being a financial leader in financial services in all areas of our domestic market, and the acquisition positions RBC as a leader in the auto finance business in Canada," Nixon said.

Even so, shares of RBC along with other Canadian banks pulled back on Tuesday, after the Bank of Canada held its key rate at 1.0 percent and softened its bias on an interest rate increase somewhat by making the timetable for such a move less definite.

Ally's Canadian arm offers commercial loans to more than 580 auto dealerships across the country, while its consumer business offers retail financing to Canadian consumers through about 1,600 dealerships.

RBC expects the Ally Canada business to generate about $120 million in net income on a standalone basis within the first 12 months after closing. The deal is expected to modestly boost RBC's earnings per share in the first year after closing.

Ally CEO Michael Carpenter said in a statement the lender would evaluate options for its remaining operations in Europe and Latin America, and expects to identify its plans in November.

Ally's international operations in Europe, Canada, Latin America and Mexico have drawn interest from more than 30 bidders, including banks and GM, a source familiar with the situation told Reuters on Monday.

The lender's Canadian operations, based in Toronto, are its largest outside the United States, with $13.6 billion in assets at the end of the third quarter. Ally's international business assets totaled $31 billion, according to data in a recent company presentation.

Ally is aiming to turn around its operations by focusing on U.S. auto lending and banking.

Its Residential Capital mortgage unit filed for bankruptcy in May in a bid to protect the parent company from lingering liabilities tied to home loans it sold to investors during the housing boom.

An auction for ResCap's mortgage servicing and lending operations begins on Tuesday in New York. A consortium of Ocwen Financial Corp and Walter Investment Management Corp is vying with Nationstar Mortgage Holdings Inc to buy the business, sources told Reuters last week.

Apple's Mac moves take advantage of Windows 8 hardware uncertainty

Apple launched a new 13-inch MacBook Pro with a Retina Display that weighs in at 3.57 pounds, will start at $1,699 and starts to ship on Tuesday. The move is designed to trump Microsoft's Windows 8 launch and take advantage of a lot of hardware uncertainty.

Phil Schiller, marketing chief at Apple, unveiled the 13-inch MacBook Pro that is "super thin and light." Those last points are worth noting. The latest MacBook Pro isn't MacBook Air or ultrabook light, but it's not far off.

Apple's message is that it'll continue to innovate with the Mac, but the broader theme is that the company's line-up is easy to understand. Apple launched the 13-inch MacBook Pro, new iMac and Mac Mini. The Apple Mac portfolio features an iMac that's tablet thin too (photos via CNET's James Martin).

The contrast between the Mac launch today and Microsoft's Windows 8 rollout is intense. Microsoft is hitting the market with dozens of form factors. You have convertible devices, tablets, laptops with touchscreens and a lot of uncertainty. The star of the Microsoft show---the Surface---is largely a missing.

maclineup2

Indeed, at the Gartner Symposium in Orlando, Microsoft's Windows 8 booth was bustling. Tech execs were playing with a bevy of devices, but largely seemed uninspired. Microsoft reps gamely walked people through Windows 8 and a Windows 8 RT tablet. Then a man asked about the elephant in the room.

IT pro: "Where's the Surface?"
Cheery Microsoft rep: "You can preorder one, but they won't appear until Friday."
IT pro: But I don't care about these. I want to see the Surface.
Cheery Microsoft rep: I know but you'll just have to wait.

There are thousands of CIOs passing through Orlando this week. Some of them see the Surface as a convergence device. Microsoft should work that angle.

Gartner analyst David Cearley said one of the biggest questions around Windows 8 is whether notebook/tablet hybrids will be compelling. Intel CEO Paul Otellini noted that it may take a year for Windows 8 to have a hero form factor.

"Our customers are designing entirely new categories of PCs," said Otellini, adding that there will be more than 140 core-based Ultrabooks rolled out next year -- more than 40 of which will have touch capabilities and more than a dozen will be convertibles.

In other words, the Wintel world is throwing form factors against the wall to see what sticks. Apple has Mac clarity. It's going to be an interesting December quarter for client computing.

Court blocks Ind. defunding of Planned Parenthood

(AP) ? Indiana can't block Medicaid funds for Planned Parenthood just because the organization provides abortions, a federal appeals court ruled Tuesday, upholding the crux of a lower court order that said the state couldn't deny patients the right to choose their own health care provider.

The ruling will likely have little impact on Planned Parenthood's operations in Indiana as funding to its clinics has been largely uninterrupted since Republican Gov. Mitch Daniels signed a law attempting to cut the organization off in May 2011.

That law made Indiana the first state to deny the Planned Parenthood Medicaid funds for general health services including cancer screenings. The organization immediately challenged the law with help from the American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana. District Judge Tanya Walton Pratt blocked the state from enforcing the law in June 2011.

The state appealed that order, arguing that federal law says Medicaid cannot be used to cover abortions in most circumstances and that the program indirectly funds the procedures by providing money for Planned Parenthood.

On Tuesday, the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago upheld the core portion of Pratt's order, saying the Indiana law effectively stamps on a person's right to choose their doctors.

"The defunding law excludes Planned Parenthood from Medicaid for a reason unrelated to its fitness to provide medical services, violating its patients' statutory right to obtain medical care from the qualified provider of their choice," the ruling said.

Bryan Corbin, a spokesman for the Indiana attorney general's office, said the state was reviewing the appeals court opinion. The state can either ask the full court to review the panel's ruling or appeal directly to the Supreme Court. The governor's office did not return phone calls Tuesday morning seeking comment.

The ACLU said the appeals court decision was a victory, above all, for women.

"This law was an attempt by politicians to punish organizations that are providing legal services," Talcott Camp, deputy director of the ACLU Reproductive Freedom Project, said in a news release. "Elected officials should not place politics above women's health."

The appeals court also said Pratt needed to modify other sections of her order that ACLU attorney Ken Falk said dealt with revenue sources other than Medicaid.

Dark Souls, From Software successful RPG released last year on PS3 and XBox360, is getting a new patch for the release of its first DLC pack Artoria of the Abyss on consoles.
Pc gamers have already been enjoying the extra content since the release of Dark Souls : Prepare to die edition on PC.
In a few days (October 23th in the United States and October 24th in Europe) the ?Prepare to die? edition will be hitting consoles: gamers who already bought the game can get the expansion pack from PSN. No mention for the XBox 360 version yet.
The Artorias of The Abyss expansion is a package of new content separate from the main game: it includes new bosses, areas, weapons and armors, non playable characters and new player versus player options.
The DLC will tell the story of Knight Artorias, one of the four knights of Gwyn and the famed ? Abysswalker?.
The new patch will improve the game?s balance and remove a few glitches, like using the Dragon Head for an unlimited amount of times; some spells will be tweaked and some weapons have had their attributes lowered. Some overpowered pieces of equipment like Black Knight Greataxe, Soul Spear, Crystal Soul Spear and Eagle Shield have been nerfed too.
This patch isn?t just bad news for the adventures of Dark Souls? world: the number of bonfires, the game ?s checkpoints, have been increased, making it slightly easier to travel around.

Uganda may stop mediating in Congo over U.N. accusations

KAMPALA (Reuters) - Uganda said on Monday it would stop mediating in the conflict between the Democratic Republic of Congo and M23 rebels if the U.N. Security Council endorsed accusations that Uganda was supporting the rebels.

A report by a U.N. panel of experts leaked to Reuters last week accused Uganda and Rwanda of providing support to M23, whose insurgency has displaced half a million people in North Kivu province, which borders both countries.

The report, written for the U.N. Security Council's Congo sanctions committee, said Uganda had allowed M23's political branch to operate from Kampala in addition to providing M23 with troops, weapons, technical help, political advice and facilitation of external relations.

"We have contacted the U.N. via our diplomats in New York because we want to know whether what the media wrote about is true," junior foreign minister Asuman Kiyingi told Reuters.

"If the U.N. confirms its experts wrote these outrageous falsehoods, then we'll withdraw from our mediation role in the conflict between Congo and the M23 rebels."

Kiyingi said the allegations were already undermining the perception of Uganda as a neutral mediator.

Analysts say Uganda and Rwanda have maintained extensive commercial and military networks in Congo's mineral-rich east since the two countries sent troops into Congo twice in the 1990s and 2000s.

The Ugandan government has already denied it supports M23, calling the allegations "rubbish, rubbish, rubbish."

Congo has demanded sanctions on Ugandan and Rwandese officials funneling support to M23. The U.N. Security Council on Friday adopted a statement expressing an intention to impose sanctions on M23's leaders and those who violate a U.N. arms embargo on Congo.

Uganda has been spearheading faltering efforts by a regional body, the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR), to put together a 4,000-strong force to neutralize M23 and police the border between Congo and Rwanda.

U.N. peacekeeping chief Herve Ladsous told reporters at the United Nations in New York on Monday that no countries bordering the Democratic Republic of Congo would be contributing troops to such a force.

"There is a military assessment team that is meeting in Goma so we have to wait for their recommendations," Ladsous said. "It is still being worked upon but we expect some results in the next few days."

"Of course the devil is in the details and we would have to look very closely at the composition of that force, at its command and control mechanisms, how to coordinate with (U.N. peacekeepers) and agree on very specific objectives," he said.

M23 said this month that Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni was trying to engage it in direct talks with Congo, although Congo has denied that and said it had not dropped its refusal to negotiate with the insurgents.

Kiyingi said Uganda would stop its mediation role even if the United Nations did not endorse the accusations but still imposed sanctions on M23 leaders.

"We cannot try to bring two parties to the table to talk when one is under sanctions and the other is not," he said.

Improve Your Life and Develop a Scentific Mindset!

The scientific mindset is a great way to better understand the world and how to adapt to it. This mindset is not only useful in colleges and laboratories, but also in our everyday life.

By learning to be a more scientific thinker, we respect the facts, question our beliefs, practice our knowledge in the real world, and never stop learning new things.

This mindset can significantly benefit ours lives by teaching us how to adapt effectively to our always changing world. Anyone can benefit from adopting a more "scientific mindset."

Here are the main principles in how to be a more scientific thinker:

Respect the facts and evidence.

Scientific minds respect the truth. They look for facts and evidence to support their views, because that's the only knowledge they can reliably use to navigate their world and better their lives.

A mind that seeks truth is better than a mind that is filled with delusion. No matter if the truth is pleasant or painful, the truth - in the long run - is what sets us free from ignorance and suffering.

Despite the power of truth, many people are afraid of it.

They ignore facts and evidence that go against their assumptions, prejudices, and desires. They aren't willing to admit when they are wrong. And they cling to a worldview that isn't congruent with the reality around them because they aren't ready to accept it yet.

A good scientist must be open-minded and willing to accept reality for what it is at all times. They must respect the facts and evidence they encounter on a daily basis.

"It is far better to grasp the universe as it really is than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reassuring."
-Carl Sagan

"I believe in evidence. I believe in observation, measurement, and reasoning, confirmed by independent observers. I'll believe anything, no matter how wild and ridiculous, if there is evidence for it."
-Isaac Asimov

"We can ignore reality, but we cannot ignore the consequences of ignoring reality."
-Ayn Rand

Question your beliefs.
As much as we want to know the truth, we must also recognize that the human mind is prone to error.

The most intelligent people are still biased in one way or another. Everyone makes mistakes. So true intelligence requires that we remain skeptical of our beliefs at all times, because you never know when you might be wrong.

Doubt is a healthy and necessary aspect of a learning and growing mind. It causes us to seek more knowledge and information, especially information that goes against our pre-existing beliefs.

Anyone that is completely certain of what they know, or thinks they know everything, is lying to themselves. Being humble and modest about our beliefs keeps us firmly grounded in reality.

"I am too much of a skeptic to deny the possibility of anything."
-Thomas Henry Huxley

"It is scientific only to say what is more likely and what less likely, and not to be proving all the time the possible and impossible."
-Richard Feynman

?

"The greatest enemy of knowledge is not ignorance, it is the illusion of knowledge."
-Stephen Hawking

Practice your knowledge in the real world.

The most important knowledge is knowledge that is practical and useful to our lives.

Don't get trapped in philosophy and theory if the answers you get have no bearing on how to live your life better. Sometimes we put too much focus on information and not enough on putting that information into action.
Results should always be the main goal. And often what works for us is a better gauge of truth than what doesn't work for us.

Be practical with the knowledge you gain. Test and experiment with your ideas in the real world. Pay attention to what happens. If your ideas aren't bringing you the results you want, then you may need to try alternatives.
Using our knowledge effectively is often a game of trial-and-error. Keep what works, and discard what doesn't. This is something a scientific mind does well.

"In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. But, in practice, there is."
-Jan L. A. van de Snepscheut

?

"Knowledge is treasure, but practice is the key to it."
-Lao Tzu

Never stop learning new things.

A scientific mind tries to learn something new everyday. They realize that there is infinite knowledge in the world and we can never know it all, but we can always discover more.

Some people believe that they stop learning after high school or college. They feel it's no longer necessary to seek new knowledge, like read books, watch documentaries, experience new things, or do research. This attitude is what keeps people stuck in the same old patterns of their life.

We cannot better our choices and habits unless we are always willing to learn new things. Learning is the foundation of all growth and self-improvement. A mind that never stops learning can potentially overcome any obstacle in life.

"The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn."
-Alvin Toffler

"Wisdom is not a product of schooling but of the lifelong attempt to acquire it."
-Albert Einstein

?

"We are not what we know but what we are willing to learn."

-Mary Catherine Bateson

Missing barista's remains found, neighbor arrested

By NBC News staff and wire reports

GRESHAM, Ore. ??Searchers found the body of a young Oregon woman who vanished this week on her way to work and a neighbor has been arrested, Gresham police said late Friday night.?

The body of Whitney Heichel, 21, was found on Larch Mountain, a remote, forested area east of Gresham, Police Chief Craig Junginger told a news conference.?

After collecting DNA and fingerprints and conducting three interviews over three days, police arrested Jonathan Holt, 24, of Gresham, for investigation of aggravated murder, the chief said.?

Holt lived in the same apartment complex as Heichel and her husband.?

The Starbucks barista reportedly left her apartment for work at about 6:45 a.m. Tuesday on a drive that typically takes less than five minutes.?

Her husband, Clint, called police roughly three hours later. He told investigators he tried to reach Whitney multiple times after her boss alerted him that she never arrived for her 7 a.m. shift.?

Police said Heichel's ATM card was used at a nearby Troutdale gas station at 9:14 a.m. Tuesday. Two hours later, her sport utility vehicle was found in a Wal-Mart parking lot with the passenger side window smashed.?

Missing Oregon barista?s cell phone found; police searching for clues

A child later found her cell phone in a field that lies between the gas station and the Wal-Mart, giving investigators another venue to search.?

Police have been searching Larch Mountain since Wednesday, believing that Heichel's SUV was driven there.?

?To say that this case brought fear and anxiety to the community is an understatement,"?Gresham Mayor Shane Bemis told the Oregonian?on Friday. "Our law enforcement personnel and our community searched for Whitney as if she were a member of their own family."

Detectives interviewed Holt on Wednesday and Thursday before arresting him during a Friday night interview, the chief said.

Stay informed with the latest headlines; sign up for our newsletter

There were "many inconsistencies" in Holt's interviews, Junginger said.?

Additional crime lab evidence received Friday morning tied him to Heichel's vehicle, the chief added.?

It was not immediately known if Holt was represented by a lawyer.?

Clint Heichel gets a hug from Lorilei Ritmiller, mother of Whitney Heichel, as he breaks down after he attempted to speak at a news conference on Thursday.

Jim Vaughn, a family spokesman, addressed the Friday night news conference, thanking police for their commitment in the case.?

"Really, words can't begin to express the sadness that our families are experiencing tonight," Vaughn said.?

"Whitney was a very loving person," he added. "She was warm, she was kind, she was everything you would want in a friend, relative, spiritual fellow worshipper."?

He asked for privacy for the family, saying "our loss and heartache is too much to bear right now."?
Police took no questions.?

Cover Story: Mitt Romney's Tattoos, After Norman Rockwell : The ...

20121029_Cover_465.jpg

Next week?s cover, ?Skin Deep,? by Barry Blitt, pays homage to the Norman Rockwell painting ?The Tattoo Artist.? We asked Blitt how he came up with this idea. ?My grandfather was a Sunday painter, he used to copy a lot of Norman Rockwell paintings, so I was aware of all the classic images at a very young age,? he told us. ?Mitt Romney looks like he stepped out of one of those pictures. It?s not much of a stretch to imagine him in many of the wholesome, enduring American situations Rockwell painted. The family in the station wagon before and after their vacation could easily be the Romneys and their five sons (with dog overhead). It?s also not hard to imagine Mitt in college garb?in one of those Rockwell vignettes?cutting that fellow-student?s hair as his buddies held the boy down.?

???The Tattoo Artist? features a sailor with a long list of girlfriends? inked names crossed out on his arm,? he said. ?This seemed like a nice tableau for highlighting Mitt the politician?s shifting positions and convictions.?

The 1980?s.
A time when popular culture was consumed by Madonna, Nike sneakers and ?Back to the Future.?
In 2012, teens are more interested in country music, Sperry?s and ?The Dark Knight Rises.?
For the most part, teenagers act the same way they did 30 years ago. We come home past our curfews, get in countless arguments with our parents and just want to have fun.
However, could we say that teenage romance is the same in both generations?
Probably not, and for one reason: technology.
I know, we?ve all heard it before, ?When I was your age, no one had cell phones.?
Well, although we hate to admit it, that annoying adult who constantly reminds us how times have changed is right.
Back then, young people had to talk to each other in person. They didn?t have Facebook, Twitter, email or texting.
If a guy wanted to ask a girl out, he had to ask her while looking at her face.
There was no computer screen to hide behind if he was rejected.
And how weird would it be meeting someone at a party and not being able to Facebook stalk them afterward?
Pretty weird, if you ask me.
Nowadays, people don?t go out with someone they haven?t texted at least a few times before. But we can?t truly get to know someone by only texting them.
Sure, texting might be less nerve-wracking, and it may give us more time to think about what to say next, but it means more when we take time out of our day to hang out with each other.
When we?re physically with someone, they know we are only focusing on them.
When we are texting them, it?s hard for the other person to tell what we are actually doing at that moment.
We could be on another date, and the other person wouldn?t even know it.
Call me old-fashioned, but there are some situations that require more than just a ?send? button.
The bottom line is, instead of Facebook-stalking or texting people, try talking to them face-to-face because genuine communication will be much more rewarding.

Researchers develop new drug to target and destroy tumor cells

Thursday, October 18, 2012

A new drug created at the University of Minnesota may hold the answer to defeating pancreatic cancer, according to results published today in the prestigious journal Science Translational Medicine.

The study is based on successful outcomes in a mouse model ? results researchers expect to carry over to human patients when the drug potentially begins human trials in 2013.

The drug, Minnelide, is a type of injectable chemotherapy designed to target tumor cells. The drug works by inhibiting a heat shock protein, HSP 70, which has been proven to aid the growth of tumor cells. By stopping HSP 70 from working, Minnelide disperses the cells integral to the tumor's growth and the cancer disintegrates. The drug is based on patented technology designed in the lab of Ashok Saluja, Ph.D., professor and vice chair of research in the University of Minnesota Medical School's Department of Surgery. Selwyn Vickers, M.D., chairman of the Department of Surgery, Gunda Georg, Ph.D., director of the Institute for Therapeutics Discovery and Development in the College of Pharmacy, and Bruce Blazar, M.D., director of the Center for Translational Medicine, also partnered on this project. Pancreatic cancer is the most lethal of all cancers. This year alone, more than 44,000 Americans will be diagnosed with the disease and the median survival time following a pancreatic cancer diagnosis is just six months.

"A diagnosis of pancreatic cancer is incredibly grim. There is no good way to treat or cure this particular type of cancer," said Saluja, who holds the Eugene C. and Gail V. Sit Chair in Pancreatic and Gastrointestinal Cancer Research, "and the best options currently available offer just six weeks of added survival. It is far from tackling the real problem which is that pancreatic cancer tumor cells make survival proteins, rendering them increasingly difficult to defeat." In 2007, Saluja and his collaborators discovered pancreatic cancer cells have too much HSP 70, which protects cells from dying. Because of this excess protein, pancreatic cancer cells are difficult to target with drugs, meaning the logical next step in fighting the cancer was to determine how to inhibit HSP 70 in these tumor cells.

Saluja found that triptolide, a compound derived from plants in China, worked to halt the development of HSP 70 in tumor cells, but because triptolide is not water soluble, it was still difficult to administer to patients. The Saluja lab, in collaboration with the Department of Medicinal Chemistry, worked to make triptolide water soluble. They named their drug Minnelide as a nod to the compound from which it was derived, triptolide, and its discovery location, the University of Minnesota.

The University of Minnesota holds the patent on the modifying factors that create Minnelide from triptolide. It has been licensed to Minneamrita Therapeutics LLC for production.

Curses! Dalai Lama misunderstood in speech

By NBC News and wire services

The Dalai Lama didn't curse at a Brown University event, the school swears ? even if closed captioning being shown with a live video stated differently.?

The exiled Tibetan leader was urging listeners Wednesday night to share his thoughts with other people if they found them interesting. If not, he said, they could "forget" it.

But a person transcribing the Dalai Lama's remarks for closed captioning misheard the word "forget" for a profanity, a university spokeswoman said.?

The closed captioning on a large screen at the Rhode Island Convention Center transcribed the remark as "f*** it."

Some in the audience also believed the Dalai Lama, who has a strong accent, had used a profane phrase. Questions have arisen previously over the same comment in other venues.?

The Dalai Lama is interviewed by NBC's Ann Curry during his October 2012 visit to New York. In the interview he discusses the more than 50 Tibetans who have set fire to themselves in search of religious freedom.

The Dalai Lama has been visiting various cities over the last month.

Bond business lifts Morgan Stanley's results

NEW YORK (AP) ? Morgan Stanley reported higher revenue and net income for its third quarter Thursday thanks to gains in its bonds and asset management businesses.

Excluding an accounting charge, the bank earned $535 million for common shareholders in July to September, up from $39 million a year ago.

Revenue rose 18 percent to $7.6 billion after excluding the charge. That beat the $6.4 billion that analysts were expecting, according to FactSet.

In a statement, CEO James Gorman said the results showed the bank's "balanced, strategically focused" game plan. He said he was "confident in our potential to enhance profitability and increase value for our shareholders in the quarters ahead."

If the accounting charge is included, the bank lost $1 billion in the quarter versus income of $2.2 billion in the same period a year ago, and revenue fell 46 percent to $5.3 billion.

The charge was related to a controversial accounting rule that governs how banks value their debt. When the value of a bank's debt rises, it has to take a write-down because, theoretically, it would have to pay more to buy back its debt on the open market. The rule has been criticized as confusing, because it penalizes banks when their value to investors is actually rising. The rule could be phased out as early as next year.

Gorman has been moving the bank into more consumer-focused activities, notably with its expansion of the Morgan Stanley Smith Barney retail brokerage. In a call with analysts, Gorman said the bank was positioned well "for the future and the new regulatory landscape."

Revenue rose in most areas where the bank does business. It tripled in the asset management unit, which helps sophisticated clients ? mostly institutions ? invest in private equity, real estate and other investments. The bank noted gains in real estate investing, and said that clients were putting more money into some of its funds.

Revenue rose about 21 percent in the investment bank. Those results showed how customers were deciding how to invest: favoring bonds over stocks. Revenue from trading stocks on behalf of clients fell, but revenue from trading bonds and commodities on behalf of clients rose.

The investment bank also helps businesses raise money on the open market, go public, and make decisions about strategy. Morgan Stanley did less business in advising companies. It also brought in less money from underwriting stock offerings. But it more than doubled its revenue from underwriting bonds.

Nomura analyst Glenn Schorr called the quarter "reasonable." Citigroup analyst Keith Horowitz said it was "relatively good in a tough environment."

Gorman said clients have "re-engaged" with Morgan Stanley after "the uncertainty" in June, when ratings agency Moody's had knocked down its rating of the bank.

Wrote Credit Suisse analyst Howard Chen: "From what we can tell, there has been limited lasting damage from the Moody's action."

This quarter brought a coup for Morgan Stanley when it muscled through negotiations with Citigroup to buy up the rest of Morgan Stanley Smith Barney, the retail brokerage that it jointly owns with Citi.

Citi agreed to sell the rest of its stake to Morgan Stanley, but it got far less money than it wanted. As a result Citi had to take a $4.7 billion write-down when it announced its own third-quarter earnings on Monday.

Morgan Stanley wants to expand its retail brokerage arm which, while not as glamorous as higher-risk businesses, does provide a steady source of revenue.

The bank makes money there largely through charging fees when it helps customers manage their money. Riskier bank activities, like trading for its own account, can offer the opportunity for bigger profits. But that type of trading is being stamped out by new regulations. It also carries the risk that banks can miscalculate and suffer huge losses.

Gorman said in a statement that the bank is "beginning to unlock the full potential" of the retail brokerage business.

Morgan Stanley has also been slashing jobs and expenses to cushion itself against the uncertain economy. It shed about 4,500 jobs over the year, or about 7 percent of its work force. It spent more on paying its employees, though. Compensation and benefits expense rose 8 percent to $3.9 billion.

Morgan Stanley's stock edged down 9 cents to $18.40.
